Shanghai is one of the highly popular tourist destinations of the world and Shanghai Fashion is a booming industry. Over the past decades, Shanghai fashion has acquired a developed unique style of its own and different factors have played important role in this case. Owing to the western influences, the men in Shanghai use to take special interest towards foreign companies that produced and manufactured western costumes. But the traditional costume in form of the mandarin jackets and long gowns was hardly out of the fashion scenario ever. The indigenous and western pattern of dressing went hand in hand. This unique fashion sense of Shanghai made the East meet the West. The students and the merchants were the ones who initiated a new wave of fashion in Shanghai.

Gradually it developed to be a small market town with about 12000 families. In the year 1127, Kaifeng was captured. This resulted in the influx of refugees into Shanghai. The population of Shanghai increased to be 250000.

Around the 13 th century, Shanghai emerged as one of the major cotton producer and manufacturer in the country. As a result, Shanghai and the neighboring areas became the wealthiest region. The city of Shanghai grew to be the largest in China around 1800 A.D. the economy of Shanghai touched its heights in the early parts of the 19 th century. With developments in the foreign trade relations, the French, British and Americans started residing in exclusive territorial zones in Shanghai. Inevitably, the exerted much western influence over the local culture and lifestyle. But after the Communists came to power, the scenario changed a lot.

The Sino-Japanese War in 1894-95 enabled Japan to come in power and take control of Shanghai. After Shanghai came out of the Japanese subjugation, the Nationalist Chinese government took over the control of the city.

The Shanghai New International Expo Center (SNIEC) is China's leading expo center, boasting state-of-the-art facilities. With its impressive structure and expert on-site services, the 65,000-square-meter-capacity exhibition venue is a perfect meeting place for international businesses. SNIEC, which opened in November 2001, is strategically located in the country's financial and commercial district of Pudong. SNIEC's current expansion project is expected for completion this year. The plan is aimed at extending the indoor exhibition area to 200,000sqm and the outdoor space to 130,000sqm.

On 12 January 2008, over 40 designers from around the world shared a catwalk for the first time at the EcoChic Shanghai fashion show. This celebratory event, supported by leading financial firm UBS, sought to promote environmental sustainability in the fashion industry. The event focused on three different types of fashion: ready-to-wear, eco-couture and vintage. 15 eco-friendly ready-to-wear labels from around the world, including Icicle, Jade en Pluse and NuoMi from China, were showcased alongside eco-couture designs from international superstars, Diane von Furstenberg, Thakoon and Nathan Jenden. The event drew particularly strong support from leading Chinese designers, such as Jenny Ji, Lu Kun and Dorian Ho, who all used eco-textiles produced in China.

Following the fashion show, Sotheby's auction house conducted a live auction to raise funds for WWF China. Further funds were raised by Green2greener via the sale of some of the clothes that appeared on the catwalk.
